The one Smooth operator

Slicked back hair saw its heyday in the mid 1980s, but that doesn’t mean it was ever really out of fashion. Slicked back short hair is sophisticated and chic. It says “I mean business” and is great in the workplace when teamed with subtle, yet flattering make-up.

Pulling all the hair back from the face can look quite androgynous, so make up and face shape are important. Anyone with high cheekbones will already know that this is a great way to show them off, but it is a look to be avoided if you have a heavy or squarish jaw.

Despite the simplicity of this style there are a couple of different ways to wear it. Short hair is a must. Slicked back hair on longer styles creates the impression that you can’t really handle your long locks, but on short hair it looks like you are in control.

Hair can be sleeked back with a wet-look gel for authentic 80s inspired drama or allowed to bounce up a little in a softer 90s style. Our model’s slight quiff is currently very fashionable and adds height and interest.

This look is best achieved with strategic blow drying using a flat brush, leave the gel until the end to finish – or better yet use a spray-on shine, this will give a subtler effect.
